Wise owl returns one to the house

Book reading session reunites teacher and former student

May 8--Members of the Florida Atlantic University football team recently visited Pine Jog Elementary School to read books to the children.   An unexpected turn of events changed the book reading into a real life lesson. 

Travis Jones, a running back/wide receiver for the FAU Owl Football team was asked about his elementary school experience.   Mr. Jones commented that his beloved teacher helped shape the person he is today and said that “My kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Shafer, helped me through very hard times by believing that I will be great and encouraging me.”

May 9--On May 17, the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, formerly known as the South Florida Science Museum, opens – Savage Ancient Seas: Dinosaurs of the Deep – as the first traveling exhibit to fill its newly renovated exhibit hall.

Savage Ancient Seas is the aquatic world of huge carnivorous marine reptiles with double-hinged jaws and teeth in the middle of their palates, gigantic flesh-eating fish big enough to swallow an adult human being whole, flying reptiles with 3 foot skulls and the biggest sea turtles to have ever lived.  Unrivaled for their amazing varieties, voracious appetites, incredible teeth and gaping jaws, the creatures of the Savage Ancient Seas are unlike anything known in today’s world.

FAU President resigns amid controversies

May 15--Beleaguered Florida Atlantic University President Mary Jane Saunders resigned late yesterday in a decision that she hoped would allow the University to regain focus on its core missions rather be distracted by controversies in main stream and social media.

FAU Board of Trustees Chair Anthony K. G. Barbar accepted her letter of resignation late yesterday, responding with a letter expressing regret and praising her for her many accomplishments.

During the past school year, several incidents have been in the national and local news that have spawned protests and dissent by students, faculty, and university supporters.

The recognition highlights the district's successes in enhancing and extending teaching and learning with thoughtful and innovative implementations of technology. The Apple Distinguished Program designation is reserved for programs that meet criteria for innovation, leadership, and educational excellence, and demonstrate a consistent vision of exemplary learning environments.
